Line Guide

Silver Line Guide: History, Schedule & Rider Tips

The Silver Line runs approximately 46 miles from Ashburn and Dulles International Airport through Tysons Corner, Reston, downtown DC, and into Largo Town Center in Maryland — here is everything you need to plan your trip, understand the schedule, and ride like a local.

History of the Silver Line

The Silver Line opened in two phases: Phase 1 launched July 26, 2014, connecting Largo Town Center to Wiehle-Reston East with 11 stations through Tysons Corner. Phase 2 opened November 15, 2022, extending 6 more stations to Ashburn and Washington Dulles International Airport — a project nearly two decades in the making.

The line transformed Tysons Corner from a car-dependent edge city into one of Northern Virginia's most transit-accessible destinations. It also delivered Dulles Airport's long-awaited rail connection to downtown DC.

Getting to Dulles Airport (IAD)

Washington Dulles International Airport station is located inside the terminal complex, eliminating the need for any shuttle. The deepest station in the WMATA system at approximately 80 feet underground, it opened November 15, 2022. From Metro Center, the trip takes approximately 55 minutes and costs $2.25–$6.75 depending on time of day.

Rider Tips

Riding the Silver Line Like a Local

✈️

Dulles in 55 Minutes

From Metro Center to Dulles Airport is ~55 minutes and costs the same as any Metro ride. Add 15 minutes to reach your gate from the platform — Dulles is a big airport. Total door-to-gate time from downtown: ~70 minutes.

🛍️

Tysons Without a Car

Tysons Corner, Spring Hill, and Greensboro stations all access the Tysons corridor malls with no need for a car or parking fees. The Silver Line transformed Tysons into Northern Virginia's most accessible shopping destination.

🔄

Check Platform Signs

Silver Line trains share platforms with Blue and Orange lines in DC. Always check the digital destination signs on the platform — not just the train color. A train showing "Largo" could be Blue or Silver.

🅿️

Best Parking Options

Wiehle-Reston East has a large multi-level garage that fills later than stations closer to the city. Herndon and Reston Town Center also have better availability after 7:30 AM compared to Wiehle.

🌃

Reston Town Center Nights

Reston Town Center station drops you in the heart of Reston's restaurant and bar scene. The walk from the station is zero — the platform exits directly into the plaza. Perfect for dinner without driving.
