Yellow Line Guide: History, Schedule & Rider Tips

The Yellow Line runs approximately 28 miles from Huntington in Virginia through Reagan National Airport, Pentagon, downtown DC, U Street, and into Greenbelt in Maryland — here is everything you need to plan your trip, understand the schedule, and ride like a local.

History of the Yellow Line

The Yellow Line opened in two phases, with the initial segment between National Airport and Gallery Place launching in April 1983. The southern extension to Huntington came in December 1983, and the northern extension to Greenbelt completed in 1993. The line shares extensive track with both the Blue Line (in Virginia) and the Green Line (in DC and Maryland).

The Yellow Line's U Street and Columbia Heights stations are among the most historically significant in the system — built above the Freedman's Bureau neighborhood and one of DC's most vibrant African-American cultural corridors.

Reagan Airport Access

The Yellow Line provides direct access to Reagan National Airport (DCA) alongside the Blue Line. The station is connected to Terminal B/C — no shuttle or bus is needed. From Gallery Place, the trip takes approximately 20 minutes. This is one of the most convenient airport connections in the United States.

Rider Tips

For Old Town Alexandria, ride to King Street–Old Town and walk down King Street to the waterfront (15 min).
U Street and Columbia Heights are the best stops for DC nightlife on weekends — bars close at 2 AM, trains run until 1 AM Fri/Sat.
Use Fort Totten to cross between the Red Line and the upper Green/Yellow corridor without going downtown.
Pentagon City and Crystal City are walking distance from each other via an underground tunnel.

Riding the Yellow Line Like a Local

Reagan in 15 Minutes

From Gallery Place to Reagan Airport is about 20 minutes, with no transfer needed. The station connects directly to Terminal B/C — leave your hotel 45 minutes before your flight for comfortable timing.

Penn Quarter Dining

Archives–Navy Memorial station drops you in the heart of Penn Quarter, one of DC's best dining and arts neighborhoods. The Newseum site, National Portrait Gallery, and dozens of restaurants are within a 2-minute walk.

U Street Nightlife

U Street station is the starting point for DC's best live music scene. The neighborhood hosts jazz clubs, soul food, and Ethiopian restaurants. Last Yellow trains leave around 12:45 AM on weekends — plan accordingly.

Yellow vs. Green

Yellow and Green trains run the same stations from L'Enfant to Greenbelt. They only differ in Virginia (Yellow goes to Huntington, Green goes to Branch Avenue). Always check the destination board on the platform.

Old Town Alexandria

King Street–Old Town is the gateway to one of America's best-preserved colonial cities. From the station, walk east on King Street 15 minutes to reach the Potomac waterfront. Free trolley runs on King Street on weekends.

Fort Totten Shortcut

Need to get from the Red Line to U Street or Columbia Heights? Transfer at Fort Totten instead of going all the way downtown to Gallery Place. This saves 10–20 minutes during rush hour.
